Essay Corrections System - 1615 Words
When it comes to corrections, it is clear what their mission is and that is to incarcerate criminals, however it also ensures that those incarcerated receive treatment to prepare them for reintegration and reentry into society. Ever since the creation of prisons, some wonder how we managed to survive without them in the past. Unfortunately, we do have neither the resources nor the capital to incarcerate all who chose to engage in criminal behavior. Utilizing other programs like probation are needed in order to accommodate those who wish to offend. It appears like the Supreme Court officials have forgotten that the offenders that they are releasing are criminals. Why are these officials willing to place a large amount of these offenders that were convicted by the courts back into society and jeopardize our public safety? I am concerned that due to the high case load our probation and parole officers face that many of these offenders will go unsupervised. Fortunately, our corrections system still continues to hire new officer to help with probation and parole which are the two major programs that track and ensure most of these offenders are being supervised and they also help with prison overcrowding. Culture is seen as a system of shared beliefs and meanings. On the other hand society is composed of members who typically share a common culture or, at least, a recognised set of values, symbolism and other interactions such as social structure that defines the societys members. Modern day hunter gatherers have adapted to geographical regions which have shaped their way of everyday life, social structure and organisation. The San of south Africa, as a result of their permanent settlement and geographic region, requires the males (because of their physical attributes) to travel and hunt for game, a rare source of nutrition which is normally eaten on special occasions. Women hold a more important role within a band as they areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the case of the San, territory is shared within the band and if one leaves he/she still has the right to a share of the land. This ââ¬Å"sharedâ⬠concept translates into equality between male and female hunter gatherers. Although different tribes of hunter gatherers are widely dispersed throughout the world they share a common belief. Since they depend on the earth, animals and weather to sustain their lives they have become one and mystified with nature. The tropical rain-forests that horticulturalists inhabit are tough environments for cultivation due to the uproar of trees and little sunshine penetrating them. Horticulturalists have adapted to this ecological restraint buy deforesting, cultivating the land, burning it, leaving it to fallow then move onto a new piece of land this is known as swidden cultivation. Unlike their hunter gather cousins, horticulturalist families must own more land than needed to be able to cultivate one garden and harvest another. Owning more land means being able to own more surplus of wild pigs, as with the Maring case, which reflects a manââ¬â¢s capital. Having more than one wife and children contributes to the labour of the gardens and is therefore beneficial to the man. (reflecting gender inequality). Beowulf Keenest or Deserving of Praise free essay sample
Questioned Motivations The epic poem Beowulf translated by E. Talbot Donaldson has a great sense of heroism and bravery throughout. Though the main character Beowulf is a noble warrior, his motives are questioned as to whether he is ââ¬Å"keenest for praiseâ⬠or ââ¬Å"deserving of praiseâ⬠. Beowulf is idolized in the poem which speaks of his great courage. However, are his acts of valor for his own glory and well-being, or for the safety of others? As the audience reads Beowulf, the more indecisive we become on whether the Geat hero is acting out of want of fame or desire to do genuine good. The first demonstration of time where Beowulf shows he is in eager want of praise is when he says, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢I thought quickly to bind him on his deathbed with my hard grasp, so that because of my hand-grip he should lie struggling for life-,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Donaldson 954-955). As the reader understands Beowulfââ¬â¢s words it is seen that he may not be as humble as one had thought. We will write a custom essay sample on Beowulf: Keenest or Deserving of Praise or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page His exaggeration of the event shows that he talks himself up in order to be seen as even more courageous then he already is. His quickness to describe his strength in battle comes off as self-absorbed.A second demonstration of Beowulfââ¬â¢s glorification of events and how he is ââ¬Å"most eager for fameâ⬠is when the poet writes, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢I shall get glory, or death will take me,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (1497). Beowulf seems as if he is saying without gaining glory then he would want death to take him as if he is so humiliated he could not live. Beowulf comes off as arrogant and that if he does not get what he wants and what he feels he deserves then he could not bear to live without it. Beowulf knows that all already recognize him as a courageous warrior but in his eyes that just isnââ¬â¢t enough without having all the glory he would like.Though many examples can be used to defend the statement that Beowulf is acting for the sake of his own glory and praise, I believe that Beowulf is truly acting out of concern for the safety of the citizens of Herot and other lands. This is shown when Beowulf i s speaking of glory and when one truly deserves it. The poet writes Beowulfââ¬â¢s words, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Let him who may get glory before death: that is best for the warrior after he has gone from life,â⬠(1382-1383). Beowulf reveals that his opinion on glory is that one shall not receive proper glory until that one is ââ¬Å"gone from lifeâ⬠.The audience may translate this as the poetââ¬â¢s evidence of how Beowulf does not live for glory because he believes it can only truly obtained after death. Beowulf lives for the protection of others and his words show that the only motivation he has is to be a great warrior and savior. Another quote that proves his acts are for the well-being of others is when Beowulf is speaking to his warriors right before he goes to fight the dragon and declares, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢This is not your venture, nor is it right for any man except me alone that he should spend all his strength against the monster, do this manââ¬â¢s deed,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (2525-2527).Beowulf would rather go alone and fi ght the dragon than have his retainers go and have many lose their lives. Beowulf is speaking with people other than himself in mind; he is more concerned with their lives than defeating the dragon. Here he shows that glory isnââ¬â¢t his main priority, he would rather die in the process of doing something courageous and for others than gain glory by defeating the dragon and having many men lost their lives. In conclusion, a lot of readers would say that the main character Beowulf is ââ¬Å"keenest for praiseâ⬠and just looking for ways to because famous with all his courageous deeds of fighting monsters. However, I believe that Beowulf has all the right motives, and that he truly just wants to help with the problems in Herot and his own land though at times he may seem arrogant. Beowulf continually shows that he is a courageous warrior and his words that describe how he is concerned for otherââ¬â¢s lives rather than beating a monster shows quite a lot. In all, Beowulf has gotten what he thinks is best for a warrior after they have died; glory.

Well Go No More A
Well Go No More A-roving Essay In Well Go No More A-roving, Lord Byron proves the essentiality of ones youth in their life. Through this the poet brings in the universal concept of wear and tear to as he tries to make the reader realize that the end of youth can halt benefits for a person and one should enjoy it to the fullest. Byron provides illustrations of physical wear and tear in order to make the reader understand the bodily change that one goes through during old age. He writes For the sword outlives its sheath/ And the soul wears out the breast, and by this he suggests that the body is outworn by age and is no longer able to keep up. We will write a custom essay on Well Go No More A-roving specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As one grows older, it is difficult for their body to hold on by time and such physical changes are inevitable. The poet has dramatized his approach here with these examples of wear and tear in order to lure the attention of the readers to understand these descriptions in depth. Byron tries to put forward to the reader that no one can dodge these corporal transformations and they are bound to happen eventually. Although bodily changes take place, Byron tries to make the reader be aware that the changes do not affect intangible things. Even though ones body may grow older and shrivelled, their thoughts and emotions do not deteriorate. However when he writes And the heart must pause to breathe,/ And love itself have rest, it gives the impression that although love and the emotional state of the heart can not be significantly altered, after a period of intense emotional upheaval one requires a rest. Byron also tries to tell the reader that as one grows, nothing stops for their growth. He writes And the moon be still as bright and through this the reader gets a sense that age can not stop the regular routine of nature and nature will just continue its usual activities. The poets use of melancholic tone indicates the reader that Byron must be mourning his lost youth. The loss of youth is just the more reason to enjoy it till it lasts. Byron writes Though the night was made for loving,/ And the day returns too soon,/ Yet well go no more a-roving and by this he is trying to make the reader recognize that ones youth is like the exciting night which through its loving is made to experience, explore and to enjoy. However its end can disturb this privilege one holds, leaving the person to weep for this loss. Byron tries to make the reader understand that although old age may not change the situation around one, it may affect things important to them, for e. g. even the love that has to eventually rest. One gets the sense that ultimately every object wears out its holder and this strikes the reader with the reality of life, which eventually also will finish off. The reader realizes that not only is youth an essential phase of their life but it is also the part that allows them the most benefits and opportunities, leaving one with the decision whether to enjoy them or not.

The Motif of Time in Shakespeares Sonnet Essays
The Motif of Time in Shakespeares Sonnet Essays The Motif of Time in Shakespeares Sonnet Essay The Motif of Time in Shakespeares Sonnet Essay Time may well be the most confusing, Incomprehensible and paradox matter In our universe. There seems to be no possibility of influencing it in any way and we have to accept that it will always follow its own course. While most would agree, William Shakespeare in his own way was different. In his Sonnet 19, his lyrical I even tries to stop it, this unstoppable force that alters and consumes everything, this Devouring timel, as it Is called In the first verse. Enveloped In the usual Shakespearian structure of the sonnet, the (female) lyrical I allows time to do whatever It wishes with the world, but forbids It to consume one thing: Her lovers beauty. As usual for the Shakespearian Sonnet, it consists of 3 quatrains and a closing couplet. Usually, these four sub-units present themselves as thematic blocks, suggesting a certain independence from each other and sometimes even a contrast, but we cannot deny that the basic, four-part sonnet structure has not changed since he day It was created. Embedding the human perception of time In such a structure, we are faced by a twofold demonstration of namelessness and superiority. Therefore, it seems to be the natural conclusion that the lyrical I addresses Time2 as it would address one of the deities found in several sonnets of Shakespearean and others. It goes without saying that the characteristic four-part structure of a sonnet can have a great variety of worldly counterparts, be It the four elements, the four archangels or the four temperaments. In Sonnet 19. He lyrical I makes the association quite obvious: Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets3. If we assume that each part of the sonnet corresponds with one of the seasons, the connection between the endless and elusive concept of time is limited to the human perspective: Each part of the sonnet corresponds with a stage of life. In the first quatrain, time Is presented as the consuming force in life that seems almighty because It will even defeat the lion, the king of the animals and the earths sweet rood4 seems to tie the quatrain to the concept of youth. As humans age and become adults, they start to see the wide world and all her fading sweets5, the sweetest of which is certainly love, which will become the matter of argument in the following verses. The focus of the sonnet now shifts onto the love between the lyrical I and her lover, emphasizing it as an important factor during adulthood. As life progresses and humans start to recognize that time also affects themselves, It presents Itself as harsh and unforgiving. The lyrical I even considers It a heinous crime6. Eventually, old time will do its worst and life will end. These last two verses imply a certain level of surrender, but in the end, the corporeal has to be given up anodes not matter anymore, because time has also revealed a new truth: The most important thing was not the sensual love connected to the lovers body, but the platonic love that will defeat time and in the verse ever live young And make the earth devour her own sweet brood, Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tigers Jaws, And burn the long-lived phoenix in her blood, Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets, And do whatever thou wilt, swift-footed Time, To the wide world and all her fading sweets; But I forbid thee one most heinous crime- O carve not with thy hours my loves fair brow, Nor draw no lines there with thin antique pen, Him in thy course untainted do allow For beautys pattern to succeeding men. Yet do thy worst, old Time. Despite thy wrong My love shall in my verse ever live young.
